My 5 Secrets to Happiness - Secret #5

My 5th secret to happiness (but certainly not my last) is this… Whenever you approach a situation always start by asking “How can I help you?” I find that no matter what situation you are in, if you approach the situation with an other’s first mentality then the experience will be a much more positive one.  This can be applied to everyday common courtesy such holding a door open for a stranger, giving up one’s seat on the bus (for those of us who take buses), letting someone merge into one’s lane (for those of us who drive), or saying please and thank you. ... Read more »

A Marketing Culture Based on Helping

I’ve been learning recently that marketing isn’t just about getting people to recognize your brand, it is about feeling good about promoting your product. At the beginning of the year we were focused on a direct marketing strategy that involved sourcing and calling local tour operators in an effort to convert them into users. We found over a few months that the conversion ratio was very low and that the likelihood of the user to convert into a paid subscriber let alone use the system for its free services was very low. But the thing we noticed most about this strategy is that it... Read more »

The North Shore Business Journal sent me a copy of the latest edition. It has a profile about yours truly. When I did the interview with Joanna I had no idea that the driving theme would be flying. I have to admit I was pleasantly surprised. I think she did an excellent job with the piece and I really appreciate the profile. I think it is a great little publicity piece for the squadron as well. Where can small companies turn for objective advice? To each other, thanks to peer groups such as The Alternative Board. Great article about how small companies can turn to peer groups to help with decision making and strategic direction. I read Business Week small business on a daily basis and this article in particular struck me as useful. As a small business owner with limited resources to outside advice, a peer group such as this would be a valuable resource. read more | digg story Sphere: Related Content Read More →

Adapting to Change is Crucial for Small Businesses

Change is inevitable. Failure is inevitable. Failure to change is not inevitable. A recent experience with our sales approach and marketing plan has lead to a shift in focus for the company. We found that after a couple of months of fully executing our sales plan that we were seeing a very low rate of conversion of trial accounts to paid accounts. After investigating further we discovered that the majority of the leads we were targeting were not particularly Internet savvy or technologically inclined. As disappointed as we were with this realization, we decided that we could not abandon... Read more »

Yesterday we launched the Karma Exchange at the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce Connections Simplified breakfast. It was a hit! We had a turn out of 57 people and we were able to combine the business introduction portion with a real life Karma Exchange simulation. Each person in the group stood up and gave their intro and then had to say one nice thing about the person on their right. It was a great little exercise in positive thinking because, I think, the media has trained us to look at the flaws in people first. The overall reaction has been positive from all the people that were there.... Read more »

Well, we have officially been in our new space for two weeks. The new location is in a heritage building on the corner of Lonsdale and 1st, about two blocks away from our previous building. Although the building is almost a hundred years old, the unit is in very good shape. It is a little chilly at times because of the lack of a centralized heating system, but we can get around that. The layout is excellent and the ability to work in semi-privacy really helps focus effort and concentration. I was able to spend almost two hours on the phone today talking to potential customers about the Booking... Read more »

Things are really starting to take shape now. Komivi, one of our developers at Sentias, has finished TourismCompanies.com and it looks great. I wanted the site to be a clearing house for all the members of the Booking Server and I think it will add a lot of value to the membership as well as attract a lot of user traffic. The purpose of the site is two fold; firstly it lists all the companies who are members of the Booking Server. Secondly it provides a link through to member Booking Server websites. So, it provides two benefits to the member by providing added exposure to the member companies... Read more »

Many retail business owners are being pressured into setting up shop online. But is this a realistic expectation or is it an exercise in futility. There are some very important key questions that have to be answered before considering the move to online sales. 1.Are your products conducive to mail, phone or online sales? You might think that every product can be sold online and, to some degree, you would be correct. However, should every product be sold online? The answer is no. Many products just don’t sell well online because they are not conducive to impulse purchases, the demand is low,... Read more »
