Get up and win the race
Occasionally I stumble upon stories or poems that really resonate with me. While idly flipping through Peter Legge’s If Only I’d Said That Volume V, I read a poem titled The Race by D.H. Groberg. I couldn’t help but get teary at the words. Perhaps it’s because I’m a father, perhaps because I know what it’s like to fail and carry-on, or perhaps because, like most children, I remember trying so hard to make my father proud of me. Here is a quick excerpt from the poem: “Get up,” an echo sounded low, “get up and take your place. You were not... Read more »
Small Business Marketing
I am happy to report that my article “10 Ways Small Business can succeed in a Competitive Market” was recently published by ManageSmarter.com, a Neilsen Business Media company. I submitted the article about a month ago and was elated when I discovered it had been published. ManageSmarter.com is the online home of a number of industry publications and is a very credible resource. I’ve also discovered that the article was the second most popular article on ManageSmarter.com for July. I hope to submit future articles for consideration. Thanks to Tatsuya from Atomica Creative... Communicating with your Children
At the most recent parent education session at my youngest daughter’s preschool we covered the topic of effectively communicating with our children. This covered strategies and techniques for improving communication with our kids. I have to say I always enjoy getting feedback from professionals on these subjects and I especially enjoy discussing these issues with other parents as well. It really is nice to know that we are not alone in the World when it comes to having a fussy eater or a child who likes to say the word “Poo”. The one tidbit that really stuck with me from... Annoying Habit No. 1: Clinging to the Past
I was reading through my Avantgo version of Business Week when I came across this Book Excerpt from Marshall Goldsmith entitled What Got You Here Won’t Get You There. What I like about Business Week is that the articles are really relevant, especially to small business. This book excerpt in particular really struck a chord with me. At the beginning of a new year, it is so easy to reflect back on the events of the past twelve, or more, months and look at what went well and what did not. I learned a long time ago that you can’t change the past, but you can take lessons from the past... Read more »
The other instructors and I have been trying to figure out how to get a website set up for the squadron that doesn’t infringe on DND’s requirements. The answer was actually fairly simple… we don’t. The Parent Sponsoring committee of the squadron would set up its own website and as long as it is made clear that it is managed by the PSC and volunteers not on staff with the Squadron, then it should be alright. This should help a lot with keeping the cadets up to date on events and give us an opportunity to keep the community more informed on what the Squadron does. Sentias... Read more »
Good Karma pays dividends
My current volunteer committments include the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, the Air Cadets, the Coho Society, and my daughter’s preschool. On top of being a partner in Sentias, a boss to 10 employees, a husband to my wife, and father to my children, why would I insist on committing so much time (close to 15 hours a week or more) to these other organizations? I learned through my public service experiences at school (St. Georges) and through the Air Cadets, that donating one’s time and expertise to worthy non-profit groups can pay dividends in the future. Those dividends are... Read more »
