Are we condoning behaviour like this?

Many would argue that perhaps I am over analyzing the content of one of the newest Dairy Queen ads, but being the father of two girls, I can’t sit by and laugh off the theme of this commercial. For those of you who haven’t seen the ad, I have included it below for reference. Watch it first and then continue with the post. So what did you think? Here are my thoughts. This girl is about 10 years old. The suggestion that she is mature enough to use her “feminine wiles” to get gifts from would be courtiers is grossly inappropriate. Consider for a moment that this girl... Read more »

Do we really need more disposable electronics?

I just came across this post on Wired about the $10 cellphone.  In this day and age you would think that companies would be finding ways to make the products they create either: a. Last longer in order to prevent them being dumped into over crowded landfills. b. Bio-degradable or recyclable so that they can be re-used. The concept of a $10 cellphone means that thousands, if not hundreds of thousands of these plastic, metal, acid, cadmium, and silicon mini toxic bombs are going to be thrown into garbage bins and ultimately end up in landfills or polluting drinking water.  Heaven forbid they... Read more »

People still appreciate common courtesy

I was at my favorite salon the other day for my very overdue bi-weekly trimming. The waiting area consists of four seats and when I sat down there were two men waiting for haircuts already, so I occupied one of the remaining two seats. About ten minutes after I sat down, an elderly couple walked into the salon. The wife sat in the last available seat while the husband approached the counter to tell the girl that he had an appointment for a haircut. As he was on his way back to his wife I asked “Excuse me Sir, would you like to sit down?” and offered up my seat to him. He politely... Read more »

Two Pomelos + US Customs = Missed Flight and a Bad Motel

The pomelo (or Chinese grapefruit, pummelo, pommelo, jabong, boongon, shaddock, jeruk Bali, or suha), Citrus maxima (Merr., Burm. f.), also Citrus grandis (L.), is a citrus fruit, usually a pale green to yellow when ripe, larger than a grapefruit, with sweet flesh and thick spongy rind. Those who know me, know that I don’t often get pissed off. Sometimes however it is just inevitable. Most of the time I can forgive a person if they make an honest mistake, but when somebody purposely lies and as a result causes me to miss a very important flight, then I get angry. Forgive me while I vent,... Read more »

Thousands Petition Feds on Net Neutrality

Over 11,000 people submitted comments to the FCC regarding Net Neutrality. The arguments are for and against regulating ISPs and ultimately the Internet. The issue is that there is a belief, although mostly unfounded, that ISPs slow down or restrict access to competing networks. This reminds me of “Screen Bias” back in the 80’s which was Sabre’s way of pushing competing products down to the bottom of their screens. The situation however is fundamentally different in that there were and still are only a handful of GDS companies whereas there are thousands of ISPs in... Read more »

Adapting to Change is Crucial for Small Businesses

Change is inevitable. Failure is inevitable. Failure to change is not inevitable. A recent experience with our sales approach and marketing plan has lead to a shift in focus for the company. We found that after a couple of months of fully executing our sales plan that we were seeing a very low rate of conversion of trial accounts to paid accounts. After investigating further we discovered that the majority of the leads we were targeting were not particularly Internet savvy or technologically inclined. As disappointed as we were with this realization, we decided that we could not abandon... Read more »

Disarm any situation with a smile and kind word

As a society, we have become so suspicious of others and so guarded that we approach every initial introduction with caution and potential hostility. I’ve discovered that if you start every first time meeting with a kind word I generally get a positive response and I can ease the other person’s tensions. The challenge is to think of a nice thing to say to a person whenever you see them. Although this sounds easy, it can be very difficult. We are, as a result of pop culture influences, trained to find the flaws in people and to judge people based on stereotypes. So the next time... Read more »

Is Web 2.0 just Crap 2.0?

When I started this business, I was pretty clear that I was not going to make the same mistakes as so many technology companies before us. I worked hard to make sure the products we built were solid, well tested, properly documented, and packaged. In a lot of ways, I have sacrificed significant market position by ensuring that what we delivered was well built and complete. What I am discovering is that the hype machine is starting to take over again. Having gone through Web 1.0 with some battle scars and a desire to do things right, I know all about vaporware and the ridiculous yet well funded... Read more »

Leadership is about giving people opportunities

Last weekend he Air Cadets had a winter survival exercise at Mount Seymour. Although the kids had an excellent time, the organization and execution of the activities was definitely lack lustre. Over the years I have learned that being an effective leader, especially when dealing with young people, means giving others the opportunity to take charge and fail in a safe environment. We are presented with so many opportunities to give others the chance to lead, take responsibility, and succeed or fail on their own terms. For example, during the clean-up of the equipment, the NCOs got the Cadets... Read more »

Get your agreements in writing

Having been an entrepreneur for most of my adult working life and a small business owner for a good portion of that time, I’ve been through many many situations that ended badly because there was no written agreement in place. That’s not to say that the situation could have been avoided, but the details that were the cause of the issue would most likely have been documented and part of an agreement. This is especially true when you’re having to deal with issues that are years old. I suggest you read my blog post “ANNOYING HABIT…” for my feelings on dwelling... Read more »
