As a society, we have become so suspicious of others and so guarded that we approach every initial introduction with caution and potential hostility. I’ve discovered that if you start every first time meeting with a kind word I generally get a positive response and I can ease the other person’s tensions. The challenge is to think of a nice thing to say to a person whenever you see them. Although this sounds easy, it can be very difficult. We are, as a result of pop culture influences, trained to find the flaws in people and to judge people based on stereotypes. So the next time... Read more »

At the most recent parent education session at my youngest daughter’s preschool we covered the topic of effectively communicating with our children. I tried to think to myself that there must be a strong female role model that can compete with Batman or Superman? All the female superheros, no matter how powerful or smart they may be are always depicted as inferior to their male counterparts. Those that are... Read more »

The guest speaker at our preschool was a really interesting and funny woman. I have heard her before and I really appreciate her point of view on parents and children. Her feeling is that parents focus too much on trying to be perfect parents and don’t spend enough time working on giving their children the skills and tools to succeed as healthy, vibrant, human beings. I was reminded that not very long ago, children as young as four or five years of age would have helped with the daily running of the household including milking the cow, gathering eggs, doing the cleaning. Now however,... Read more »
