In honour of Earth Hour I thought I would take a few moments to share with you five simple things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint right now. In fact, once you’re finished reading this post, I challenge you to get up and do the following five things. You’ll feel better for having done them and maybe, just maybe they’ll become part of your daily routine. 1. Look around you right now and make a mental note of all the lights that are on in your home. If you are sitting at a computer chances are you’re either at a desk, on a couch, or in bed. Turn off all the... Read more »
My 5 Secrets to Happiness - Secret #5
My 5th secret to happiness (but certainly not my last) is this… Whenever you approach a situation always start by asking “How can I help you?” I find that no matter what situation you are in, if you approach the situation with an other’s first mentality then the experience will be a much more positive one. This can be applied to everyday common courtesy such holding a door open for a stranger, giving up one’s seat on the bus (for those of us who take buses), letting someone merge into one’s lane (for those of us who drive), or saying please and thank you. ... My 5 Secrets to Happiness - Secret #4
Each of us has the potential to effect others in our community in a positive way. Since I was in school I have always enjoyed volunteering with local community groups. Whether it was collecting cans for the annual hamper drive at my school or volunteering with the YMCA as a fitness instructor or Youth Leadership Facilitator, being an active community participant has always been a cornerstone of my life. There was a period of time when I was very focused on my career that I lost sight of this and I realized after I started volunteering again just how much I enjoyed the social aspects of being... I recently attended an all day seminar entitled “Conducting Effective Meetings with Robert’s Rules of Order” presented by John Noonan, a registered parliamentarian. Naomi Yamamoto, the President & GM of the North Vancouver Chamber of Commerce, recommended I attend in order to ensure I had the appropriate skills to Chair the Board meetings during my term as Chair of the Board of Directors. I had some experience participating in Board meetings and had chaired many committee level meetings but had not chaired a full Board meeting. I can say with all confidence that if you... Read more »
My 5 Secrets to Happiness - Secret #3
Karma is a powerful force in the universe whether you choose to believe in it or not. I’m a big believer in Karma because I believe that Karma is really all about the long term implications of decisions that are made in the present. In the same way ripples extend out from the point a pebble impacts the pond, the effect that a decision has on those around us extends outwards beyond our comprehension. I think this is the same reasoning that fueled the creation of the ethic of reciprocity or “The Golden Rule” which is a fundamental moral principle found in virtually all major... Read more »
I had the chance to participate in the Enter 2008 Conference held in Innsbruck, Austria last week. “Organised by the International Federation for Information Technology and Travel & Tourism (IFITT), ENTER 2008 offers a unique forum for academics, industry and government to present and debate state-of-the-art research and industry case studies on the application of information and communications technologies to tourism and travel.†There were several trends that emerged as I listened to and engaged in some of the presentations. The trends I identified spanned across all three tracks;... Read more »
Facilitating the Dream with Kango
The travel purchase life-cycle consists of four primary phases: dream, plan, go, and reminisce. For the most part, the big travel websites have been focused on only one phase of the life-cycle: the go phase. Why? Because that’s where the money is. But, what we have begun to see is a shift in how consumers purchase travel online and, as a result, we are seeing a new breed of site develop around the other three, no less important I might add, phases of the travel purchase life-cycle. Kango is one such site. Spearheaded by Yen Lee, former General Manager of Yahoo’s Travel Division,... Read more »
Speaking in Florida on Social Media
I received confirmation last week that I have been invited to present as a keynote speaker at the Florida Association of CVB’s annual Destination Marketing Summit in Orlando. The presentation will be two hours in length and cover two segments; an introduction to social media and it’s impact on tourism marketing and strategies in using social media to market destinations to a changing user landscape. I’m really looking forward to presenting to this group primarily because: The use of social media and user generated content is a very timely subject. The audience is well positioned... Read more »
I had an interesting discussion with the President of the Finnish Chapter of IFITT and a PHD student from the Basque region of Spain about engaging small travel suppliers, primarily tour and activity providers, in the use of new technologies to help manage and distribute products. I was saddened but still encouraged to hear that both were facing the same challenges in their respective countries that I have been facing here in Canada and more specifically in B.C.. In my ongoing efforts to promote Rezgo.com as a tour operator software solution to small tour and activity operators, I have encountered... Read more »
