Blog Action Day - Environment & Sustainability
I had a pleasant surprise this morning when I checked out my Google Reader and saw that Kevin May over at Travolution had written a post about Blog Action Day and the less than stellar participation by the travel industry. If there is one industry that can have the strongest impact on sustainability, at least from a marketing standpoint, it is the travel industry. Think about it for a moment. According to numerous sources (1), air travel is a major contributor to green house gas emissions world wide. Given this information it is unlikely that the airlines are going to change what fuels they use or reduce their flights because that wouldn’t be practical, however, they can all take the very real and very simple step of building carbon offsetting into their online purchasing process. Kevin notes that out of the top five UK travel properties only one, Easyjet, automatically includes carbon offsetting into the checkout process. Only one other, Lastminute.com, allows customers to offset carbon. The remaining three properties provide only cursory information about their “Environmental Policies”.Regardless of whether you believe the science, the fact remains that environmental issues are top of mind these days. Consumers are bombarded with information about carbon emissions and the societal guilt over green house gas build-up is growing everyday. Every company no matter how big or how small can play a role in helping to reduce the impact they have on the environment, both locally and worldwide.

Got something to say?

I think it is great that you took the time to write a blog about travel industry and transportation. It is up to us to change the way we live our life by figuring out alternatives to the actions we want to take, like traveling on the road for vacation.
After years of inaction, Congress finally has a chance to pass meaningful vehicle fuel legislation. The bill they are about to pass includes the best fuel economy standards ever (35 mpg by 2020) and a renewable electricity standard (15% by 2020) that guarantees the growth of renewable, clean energy. But there is a chance these two key advances won’t make it through to the final bill.
I am working with a coalition to make sure Congress sends the president a strong energy bill with meaningful changes for our environment and planet. This legislation would be a monumental step toward stopping global warming. Go to http://www.energybill2007.org.
and sign the petition. This is our chance for real progress, don’t let Congress back down!
