Offset your travel carbon emmissions
My good friend Tatsuya Nakagawa over at Atomica Creative sent me a link to an post on 21st Century Citizen over the weekend. It was timely considering I just blogged about Carbon offsetting recently. The post is about how you, as an individual traveler, can offset your carbon emissions by using the Sustainable Travel International Carbon Offset calculator. The calculator lets you choose your departure and destination and then calculates the amount of carbon produced as a result of your trip. The calculator then uses a formula to determine a dollar amount associated with programs that would reduce the emissions by an equivalent amount. The idea being that you buy your way to carbon neutrality. I have to say that I love the idea on many levels. Firstly, it drives home (no pun intended) the fact that travel has a negative effect on the environment. Secondly, it promotes accountability by clearly identifying that you, as an individual, have an impact and you can do something about it. Thirdly, it provides average people with a way to positively impact the environment, by supporting programs that reduce emissions.
Eventually I would love to see an optional carbon offset component added to the travel booking process. I don’t think it is something that should become mandatory however, because then it becomes a tax and its psychological impact would diminish.
