I just received my latest newsletter from STI (Sustainable Travel International). In the newsletter was a really interesting article about a new global survey by Lonely Planet. The survey shows that travelers world wide are concerned about their travel impacts on the climate and will support neutralizing their travel related emissions through legitimate offset programs. The survey, which polled over 24,500 people worldwide, “showed 84 percent of respondents said they would consider offsetting their emissions in the future, where only 31 percent had done so in the past. Seventy percent of... Read more »
What it means to be Sentias
Over the course of the last few months I’ve been thinking a lot about what makes up Sentias’ corporate culture. At the office, June and I often discuss how well staff are fitting into the culture or making marketing or sales decisions based on whether or not the sales or marketing initiative fits with our culture. That got me thinking… what is our corporate culture? Here is my interpretation of what it means to be Sentias: We enjoy what we do. We work together because we want to and because we enjoy ourselves while we work. We respect each other. Everyone at Sentias is... Read more »
Top 10 Errors of International SEO
Here is an excellent post from the Travolution Blog about the top 10 errors of International SEO. The article is very informative and covers some excellent points. I have experienced many of these same issues working with English and Japanese clients over the years, so it is nice to see that the lesson learned were not solitary. Being there is ALL the fun
I just read an interesting post on Tim Hughe’s blog about some comments from Rob Cuthbert at Viator about how hard it is for consumers to travel . In the last sentence, Tim writes something that I think is vitally important to the travel purchase experience and that is “the need to keep the purchase and consumption process simple for consumers.” The travel industry, especially the airfare and hotel sides of the industry are rampant with overly complicated pricing models, rates, discounts, commissions, and such. In the end, I think that everyone loses out because the traveler... Read more »
The TripAdvisor Cities I’ve Visited
So it certainly didn’t take long for TripAdvisor to rebrand their latest million dollar purchase. The “Where I’ve Been” app is now the TripAdvisor Cities I’ve Visited application on Facebook. Although the application is pretty much the same, it has been rebranded with TripAdvisor branding and now includes a less than smooth integration with the TripAdvisor website. The overall feedback from users has been positive although the forum shows quite a bit of dissappointment with adding cities. I can see why TripAdvisor would want to buy the application. They have... Bringing IFITT to Canada
This year has been a real revelation of sorts for me. I’ve seen a real turnaround in how technology in travel and tourism is recognized both locally and Internationally. For many years Europe has been at the forefront of embracing new technologies that promote travel and tourism and recognizing and supporting the travel technology industry. This year, for example, is the first Canada-e-connect conference which will be focusing on online marketing and use of new technologies to promote tourism from a strategic point of view. As a technologist, I have worked with many traditional travel... Read more »
Get up and win the race
Occasionally I stumble upon stories or poems that really resonate with me. While idly flipping through Peter Legge’s If Only I’d Said That Volume V, I read a poem titled The Race by D.H. Groberg. I couldn’t help but get teary at the words. Perhaps it’s because I’m a father, perhaps because I know what it’s like to fail and carry-on, or perhaps because, like most children, I remember trying so hard to make my father proud of me. Here is a quick excerpt from the poem: “Get up,” an echo sounded low, “get up and take your place. You were not... Read more »
Using Twitter as an SEM Tool
I’ve been going crazy signing up with web apps including Twitter. It’s a really simple application to sign-up for and use, but I must admit I had a hard time trying to figure out what it is good for. Besides being a narcissists dream come true, I didn’t really see the point. After all, who in their right mind has enough time on their hands to spend their precious moments reading about what I’m doing RIGHT NOW! I don’t really think what I do is all that interesting. So I posted a few updates about Rezgo.com and left it. To my surprise, the posts with Rezgo.com... Read more »
