As a society, we have become so suspicious of others and so guarded that we approach every initial introduction with caution and potential hostility. I’ve discovered that if you start every first time meeting with a kind word I generally get a positive response and I can ease the other person’s tensions. The challenge is to think of a nice thing to say to a person whenever you see them. Although this sounds easy, it can be very difficult. We are, as a result of pop culture influences, trained to find the flaws in people and to judge people based on stereotypes. So the next time you run into someone, try thinking of something positive to say first before they can say anything and see what kind of reaction you get.

Here are a couple of quotes from the Dalai Lama that emphasize my point…

Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions.

Be kind whenever possible. It is always possible.”
